Can you understand this line?

Play the short clip and write down how much you understood.
Example: “40% understood / words caught: futari, maji.”

Why is it so hard?

Most learners find it difficult — and that’s normal.
If you only study with textbooks, this kind of dialogue is almost impossible to catch.

「てかさ~、あの二人付き合ってるってマジ?」
(“By the way, are those two really dating?”)

Let’s look at what makes this line special in anime speech:

① Shortened forms & contractions

  • tsukiatteiru → tsukiatteru (dropping -iru)

② Spoken markers

  • tte: casual quote / rumor marker
  • teka: topic change
  • sa: softener or friendly tone

③ Word feel & tone

  • maji? = “Seriously?” (casual surprise)
  • Spoken fast and smoothly — like natural conversation among friends.

These casual phrases and slang rarely appear in textbooks.

Anime is made of conversations

Over 90% of anime Japanese is dialogue.
Friends, partners, rivals, senpai, heroes, villains — each relationship changes how people talk.

So, to understand anime, you need to practice spoken Japanese in context.

Here’s what you can download on this page:
